2012 BMW K1300S

2012 BMW K1300S Review

Conceived consistently as a sports machine, the K1300S has not only maintained, but in many areas even enhanced, the qualities of its predecessor. This high-performer combines fascinating and innovative technology of the highest calibre with outstanding all-round qualities and safety. On the road this means even greater riding precision and agility, even more dynamic power and performance, and, at the same time, the superior safety and ease of control in all situations so typical of a BMW.

The interceptor. The athlete. Aerodynamic, avant-garde. Do you know of another sporty bike with this profile? A bike that develops such pulling power with 175 hp that it take the heat out of many a 200 hp bike? But a bike you can still take out on a quick trip simply because it has great everyday suitability? At the same time a technological treat?

The reasons: 103 ft-lb of torque from 1,293 cc – and at 8,250 rpm too. With a throaty sound from a cool, hexagonal tube. With catalytic converter and exhaust valve. And with fuel consumption and exhaust emission values which would suit many a machine with half the dynamic performance.

With this jet, the whole concept of speed moves into a new dimension. This in-line 4-cylinder delivers its power in such a way that you can almost feel it when standing still. That’s because within the engine speed ranges in which you move more than 80% of the time – i.e. the lower and medium speed ranges – it delivers performance from the first yard. The real thing. And in terms of safety features, this machine is unique: ABS as standard with ASC and ESA optional. And the extras are amazing: race through the gears with the automatic shift function, pure racing in view with the 2D HP dashboard.

The BMW K 1300 S: supreme power with the sportiest of understatement. Why not try it out right away!

Extreme power. Thrilling acceleration. Instant responses across the rev range. Welcome to the ultimate sports tourer - the new BMW K 1300 S.

Its styling alone promises speed and performance. And with an output of 175hp and 140Nm of torque, speed and performance is exactly what you get. Your heart races with the engine all the way up to 11,000 rpm. And yet you remain completely calm, thanks to a highly practical design, outstanding safety features and a chassis that is a marvel of precision engineering. If you want to be the best, there's no room for half measures.

The designers of the BMW K 1300 S were very clear about their aims: even more power, even more performance. The result is a machine that combines the excitement of a track bike with the practical features needed for long-distance riding on the road, such as the famous BMW Motorrad Duolever and BMW Motorrad ABS.

The K 1300 S is also available with ESA II Electronic Suspension Adjustment as an option, allowing you to modify the suspension set-up depending on the load you are carrying.

The new K 1300 S is the most powerful and fastest BMW the world has ever seen. With an engine output of 129 kW (175 hp), combined with a kerbside weight of 254 kg, this supreme motorcycle offers the utmost in dynamic performance and sports riding. But that’s not the only attraction of the K 1300S. It also combines innovative technology of the highest calibre with outstanding safety features, creating the ultimate real world sport machine.

2012 BMW K1300S Model Features

You've got to have this!
Enjoying dynamics requires safety down to the last detail. And that is something that BMW Motorrad has been constantly reinventing for more than 20 years. The K 1300 S enjoys an excellent reputation when it comes to the fastest connection from A to B – and it fully deserves to:

High tech for everyday use
The K 1300 S is a unique interpretation of the speedbike theme. It represents a union of fascinating and innovative high-performance engineering combined with excellent all-round and everyday suitability, not to mention excellent safety.

175 hp and 140 Nm: power and understatement
Not that this jet was ever slow, but in comparison with its predecessor, its engine performance and torque specifications have been increased even more, something which, this being a genuine BMW, it bears discreetly. After all, it is a superior pioneer in its class.

The very latest streamline shape.
Maybe there is such a thing as perfect aerodynamics. And perfect design. The K 1300 S combines both of these with its own line, one which others will spend a long time searching for.

The seat of speed.
Like barely any other speedbike, the K 1300 S has managed to make the connection between the stable chassis characteristics of a supersport machine and ergonomic design for thousands of kilometres. Of course. It is a BMW.

Individual safety.
The diverse optional extras make the K 1300 S even more individual. In particular, the new ESA II, which allows the rider to configure his chassis settings on the move, once again underlines BMW Motorrad's innovative lead – and not only in terms of safety.

BMW announced several modifications to the 2012 BMW 1-Series Convertible that accentuate efficiency and premium quality. The unmistakable profile of the BMW 1-Series Convertible, which represents the purest expression of BMW DNA is now sharper than ever. The new design of the front fascia includes BMW's innovative Air Curtain that counters turbulence near the wheel arches and so reduces the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle. New exterior design accents have been incorporated into the headlight and tail light clusters. In the interior, new switches and controls have a more refined look and feel. The updated BMW 1-Series Convertible will go on sale in the Spring of 2011.

For drivers whose definition of Joy includes wind in the face and sunshine above, the BMW 1-Series Convertible continues the tradition established by the iconic BMW 2002 sport sedan. The essence of such driving purity - a responsive inline-6 engine perfectly positioned within a rear-drive chassis to provide balanced, sporty dynamics - is at the heart of this compact four-seat convertible. For the 2012 model year, two versions are available with inline-6 power: the 128i and the 135i.

Powered by a 3.0-liter, 230 horsepower inline-6 engine that generates 200 lb-ft of torque, the 128i Convertible features BMW's Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology and aluminum/magnesium construction - core elements of BMW's EfficientDynamics.

The 2012 BMW 135i features BMW's newest, 3.0-liter inline-6 engine. Equipped with a single, twin-scroll turbocharger and BMW's revolutionary Valvetronic throttle-less intake technology, the engine produces 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. Refered to internally as the "N55", the engine reaches peak torque at 1,200 rpm and maintains peak torque all the way to 5,000 rpm. With High Precision direct gasoline injectors, optimum performance and fuel efficiency are achieved with even faster engine response across the entire engine speed range. For the 135i Convertible, acceleration from 0-60 mph is accomplished with the standard 6-speed manual transmission in 5.4 seconds.

The 135i can be equipped with BMW's 7-speed Double Clutch Transmission (DCT), as featured on the BMW Z4 Roadster. Equipped with DCT, the 135i Convertible will accomplish the 0-60 mph sprint in a scorching 5.3 seconds. A 6-speed Steptronic automatic remains o ptional on the 128i. So equipped, the 128i Convertible runs 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds, or 6.4 seconds with the standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Innovative Aerodynamics: Air Curtains
Consistency between form and function is crucial to engineers at BMW who seek perfect balance of various aerodynamic factors in the wind tunnel. As a result, the new Air Curtain is BMW's latest aerodynamic innovation. Introduced first on the BMW 1-Series M Coupe, the Air Curtain will now be a standard feature on the 128i Convertible. The Air Curtain improves air flow around the front wheel arches with the benefit of significantly reduced turbulence. The 128i Convertible can also be equipped with special Aero Wheels to further enhance the performance of the Air Curtain system.

This innovative feature consists of openings in the outer section of the lower front fascia that route high-pressure air through ducts at each front corner. The ducts are approximately 10 x 3 centimeters wide and are designed to channel air to openings at the front of each wheel arch, where it is discharged through a very narrow opening at high speed. The escaping air stream covers the side of the front wheels like a curtain, thereby reducing aerodynamically unfavorable turbulence around the rotating wheels.

Air Curtain has a key role to play in the development of future aerodynamic innovations. An example of the air curtain principle was first presented in the concept study BMW Vision EfficientDynamics at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in 2009, and the developers of the BMW 1-Series M Coupe took on the pioneering task of applying this element to a production vehicle. To do so, they utilized the unique capabilities of the new full-scale "rolling road" Aerolab wind tunnel at the BMW Group's new Aerodynamic Testing Center. Now it has been added to the 128i Convertible.

Distinctive BMW Convertible appearance
In a mere 22 seconds - even on the move at speeds up to 25 miles per hour - occupants of the BMW 1-Series Convertible can go from encapsulated comfort to top-down exhilaration. If conditions dictate, the electro-hydraulically-operated softtop can be raised within the same 22 seconds, producing a distinctive silhouette enhanced by long frameless doors. The characteristic features of the BMW kidney-shaped grill, front skirt, door sills and rear skirt are identical to those of the BMW 1-Series Coupe.

The standard softtop is available in either black or taupe cloth, but it is the optional Moonlight Black version which is unique to the BMW 1-Series Convertible. Interwoven with fine shiny metallic fibers, this distinctive top produces a shimmery metallic silver appearance in sunlight. The visual effect enhances the convertible's exciting range of nine colors which includes an exclusive hue: Cashmere Silver Metallic.

A distinctive feature of the BMW 1-Series Convertible is the flared shoulder line which runs parallel to the road. This shoulder line flows from the hood past the A pillar to the trunk lid, forming a surface which encompasses the entire interior, giving the impression of a boat deck.

The view from the rear is influenced by the position of the softtop: with the top lowered, completely concealed in the tail, the look is flat and elegant; the appearance with the top up is broad shouldered. The trunk lid has an integrated spoiler chiseled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.

The individual sections within the L-shaped rear taillights give the vehicle a lower, sportier look. Horizontal lights integrated in the rear light clusters offer a homogeneous lighting effect with the help of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). This light design, as found on other BMW models, makes the BMW 1-Series Convertible stand out at night. Also, the Adaptive Brake Lights operating in two stages in relation to brake application force are yet another feature typical of BMW, with the additional benefit of extra safety on the road.

The standard (on the 135i) Adaptive Xenon Headlights (optional on the 128i), complete with integrated cornering lights, make driving in the dark safer than ever. The daytime running light function, in typical BMW style, uses the four corona rings around each headlight to enhance the visibility of the car under normal and "murky" light conditions.

Convertible interior features technology enhanced comfort, convenience
Two unique BMW 1-Series Convertible features provide increased driver and passenger comfort, thus improving the overall experience regardless of the top's position. The optional Boston leather incorporates BMW's Sun Reflective Technology where pigments worked into the upholstery mitigate the effect of the sun's ultraviolet rays. Excessive heating of the seats and armrest is diminished, especially for darker interior colors. The overall effect can produce surface temperatures some 20 degrees Fahrenheit below a comparable "normal" leather interior.

The standard upholstery is sporty and comfortable Leatherette, which is also the covering on the optional Sport Package's sport seats with enhanced side support (Boston leather can be selected for this package).

The climate-control system in the BMW 1-Series Convertible has an additional convertible mode (compared to the system in the BMW 1-Series Coupe) designed for open-roof conditions. The three standard modes; gentle, medium and intensive, react primarily to interior sensors, while the convertible mode reacts less to interior temperature and more to the exterior temperature and sunlight factors to establish the intensity of the ventilation. Turbulence in the roof-down cabin can be reduced by an available wind deflector which can be affixed to the sides of the vehicle with a few adjustments. The wind deflector allows for conversation at normal sound levels and the ability to enjoy the wide variety of audio and communication offerings which include SIRIUS satellite radio, HD radio, the optional Premium Sound system, and Bluetooth. For simple and straightforward connection of an MP3 player, an auxiliary input jack is standard and a USB port for direct control of an Apple iPod or iPhone media player is available as an option.

The control console for the entertainment and climate-control functions is integrated smoothly and harmoniously into the dashboard through its soft radii and flowing surfaces. With the optional navigation system, the iDrive controller is integrated in the center console, following BMW's characteristic philosophy of full driver control at all times. Galvanized pearl gloss surfaces adorn the interior door handles, the glove compartment handle, the radio's rotary knobs, the knobs of the automatic climate control system, the iDrive controller, and the ornamental trim strips featured on the sport steering wheel.

Spacious trunk supplemented by folding seat backs and storage bag
An active couple can carry their gear, regardless of the season, thanks to the generous trunk space offered by the BMW 1-Series Convertible. Two golf bags will fit in the trunk of the BMW 1-Series Convertible - even with the top down! Lowering the soft top produces a storage space that is 8 cubic-feet, which does not include the optional large storage bag that extends into the passenger compartment and can accommodate two snow boards or a golf bag without soiling the upholstery. A zippered opening allows access into the storage bag from within the passenger compartment.

High-tech suspension with newly-developed differential
In typical BMW configuration, the BMW 1-Series Convertible transmits power to the rear wheels exclusively. This concept - engine at the front, drive wheels at the rear - guarantees optimum traction, near-perfect weight distribution front-to-rear, excellent directional stability, and predictable handling.

The BMW 1-Series Convertible has a sophisticated suspension system with an aluminum double-pivot front suspension and a five-link fully independent rear suspension in lightweight steel. BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes a Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) function that provides electronic intervention to prevent loss of vehicle control, but at a higher threshold before activation. This allows the driver to experience more spirited driving on dry roads and offers more flexibility when driving in more challenging conditions such as in snow. If the driver desires, both DSC and DTC can be disabled entirely. Optional Active Steering - a variable ratio steering system exclusive to BMW - is available on the 135i Convertible. In addition to its duties as a safety system, the DSC system on the 135i Convertible is programmed specifically to enhance performance-oriented driving.

The rear differential on the BMW 1-Series comes from a new generation of final drives optimized for running smoothness and fuel efficiency. Featuring double-helical ball bearings for the first time, the differential runs at an even lower operating temperature reached more quickly than before thanks to the reduction of fluid required in the differential. Electronic rear brake management is always used to simulate a differential lock for stronger acceleration in turns and low-traction conditions.

The front suspension on the BMW 1-Series is also built to a unique standard in its competitive group. The double-pivot spring and strut front suspension with its anti-roll bar, is made largely of aluminum and offers an optimum combination of stiffness and low weight. The stable track control arms and thrust rods, as well as near-perfect wheel positioning, make an important contribution to the car's driving dynamics.

M-inspired design for the M Sport Package
Model year 2009 saw the introduction of a new M Sport Package, which is standard on the 135i and optional on the 128i. Features of the M Sport Package include an Aero kit for reduced lift at speed (standard on 135i), an increased top speed limiter, better brake cooling, and enhanced aesthetics while the Sports Suspension offers higher traction and reduced body roll with unique wheels and performance tires. Unfortunately, the M Sport Package deletes the Air Curtain feature.

On the 135i Convertible, the Sports Suspension also includes a high-performance brake system incorporating 6-piston fixed calipers on the front and 2-piston calipers at the rear. Additionally, the M Sport Package for both models includes BMW Individual high-gloss Shadowline exterior trim, sport seats, and M branded trim components including driver footrest, gearshift knob (for manual transmission), and door sills. Finally, LeMans Blue Metallic exterior paint is available exclusively when the M Sport Package is ordered.

Safety equipment maximized for convertible design
The four standard airbags in the 2012 BMW 1-Series Convertible are designed for the optimum protection of the car's occupants. The advanced frontal airbags are activated in stages relative to impact severity while the side airbags integrated into the sides of the front seat backrests reduce the risk of injury at chest, hip and head levels in side impact situations. The BMW 1-Series Convertible also comes with crash-optimized seats with active headrests designed to reduce the risk of neck injury in an impact from the rear.

All seats within the BMW 1-Series Convertible are fitted with three-point inertia-reel seat belts and headrests, with the front seat belts fastened on to the frames of the driver's and front passenger's seats, keeping the belt in an optimum position around the occupant's hips regardless of seat height or fore-aft placement.

Also, the driver's pedals move back automatically with a predetermined amount of deformation in the event of a frontal collision so that the risk of driver foot injury is reduced. And last but not least, the rear seats come standard with LATCH attachments for child seats. The 2012 BMW 1-Series Convertible is equipped with a roll-over sensor, which continually monitors the vertical and horizontal movements of the vehicle. As soon as the sensors register the danger of the vehicle rolling over, two roll bars are extended in fractions of a second from their storage areas behind the rear headrests. Simultaneously, the front-seat-belt tensioners are activated. Further roll-over protection is offered by the optimized stability of the A pillar and windshield frame.

2012 BMW R1200RT

2012 BMW R1200RT Review

As far as 2-cylinder fans are concerned, first-class touring has a memorable abbreviation - and it’s been around for 30 years: RT. For long-haul travelers there can hardly be any other term which has always stood for perfectly conceived motorcycling concept from start to finish: excellent wind and weather protection, optimum ergonomics, highly convenient operation combined with a top-class chassis fitted with the unique optional extras ASC and ESA II*.

In the touring segment, these features probably define the ultimate benchmark of innovation. Even though the R 1200 RT cuts a superb figure everywhere with its dynamic new design, everything about it sends out the message: built to cover thousands of miles, preferably in one go.

Then there is this fascinating mixture of distinctive engine and big bike dynamics. The characteristic “boxer” supremacy has been further enhanced in the current version: the engine’s crowning glory is now the radial DOHC** valve operating system from the HP2 Sport, though here designed for greater torque and without any loss of running smoothness: maximum torque 88 ft-lb at 6000 rpm, rated output still at 110 hp. This means a tangible increase in thrust from the lower engine speed range through to above the medium range. The new valve control in the exhaust system ensures a discreet but more dynamic sound.

And in terms of comfort, the bike boasts a new audio system available as an optional extra, with the innovative operating concept Multi-Controller carrying out virtually all commands from a single unit.

So there’s only one thing you have to do yourself - drop by for a test ride.

*ESA II = Electronic Suspension Adjustment. Electronic spring mount and spring rate adjustment

There’s a whole world out there waiting to be discovered. With a power output of 110 bhp, and 120Nm of torque, the BMW R1200RT is a motorcycle built for beautiful touring moments. The chassis incorporates the BMW Motorrad Telelever and Paralever for ease of handling, while the EVO brake with the partially integral version of BMW Motorrad Integral ABS ensures maximum safety. The combination of aerodynamically optimized fairing and an electrically adjustable windshield offers excellent protection against the elements – enjoy the freedom of the open road in complete comfort.

The new BMW R 1200 RT has everything you would look for on a long journey: comfort, practicality and speed. It handles the twisting roads north of the border with incredible agility, while its redesigned fairing offers excellent protection for both rider and pillion passenger against wind, rain and air turbulence.

The punchy new boxer engine delivers generous amounts of torque, for instant responses right through the rev range. The new DOHC (double overhead camshaft) valve operating system from the HP2 Sport delivers a maximum torque of 120 Nm at 6000 rpm and a rated output of 110hp.

And in terms of comfort, the bike boasts a new audio system with built-in radio and mp3 player available as an optional extra, with the innovative operating concept Multi-Controller carrying out virtually all commands from a roller wheel on the left grip.

Unstoppable.

Through hills, plains and wandering roads, the R 1200 RT increases your riding pleasure with every bend in the road. With a broader range of power and increased torque, you can feel the difference in throttle response and acceleration.

The redesigned fairing offers excellent protection for both rider and pillion. Featuring BMW’s latest generation ABS, ASC (traction control) and ESA II (electronic suspension adjustment), the R 1200 RT ensures a confident and comfortable ride, without end.

BMW M550d xDrive

In what seems like the blink of an eye, the BMW 5-Series range has established itself as the best-selling model in the executive segment. A convincing balance between dynamics and ride comfort, exemplary efficiency, premium quality and innovative equipment features has earned both the Sedan and the Touring versions their huge popularity. Added to which, sporty yet elegant design and agile handling have helped fuel the fascination associated with the brand. And now the arrival of the BMW M Performance Automobiles aims to accentuate the sporting aspects of the BMW 5-Series' character. The BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring capture the imagination with performance figures that leave their diesel-powered class rivals firmly in the shade. And they combine these leading values with the efficiency drivers have come to expect from diesel BMW cars.

The sporting focus of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring is highlighted by bespoke modifications to power transfer, chassis and design components. These upgrades bear the signature of BMW M GmbH, which uses its development expertise to mould the two models into extraordinarily harmonious overall packages. The outstanding power of the tri-turbo straight-six diesel engine is translated into thrilling driving dynamics with impressive precision. This allows the 5-Series-based BMW M Performance Automobiles to offer the driver not only supreme diesel power, but also remarkably agile handling and predictable, controllable responses when exploring their dynamic limits.

Most powerful engine of its kind, sportiest diesel models in the segment.

The new and globally unique M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology gives the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine powering the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp and peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft). The engine's instantaneous and sustained wave of torque allows it to lay down benchmark performance values for diesel-powered executive cars. The BMW M550d xDrive Sedan goes from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds, while the BMW M550d xDrive Touring records 4.9 seconds for the same sprint. The duo also display addictive elasticity at higher speeds thanks to their engine's vast reserves of power. Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph) in both cases.

The diesel technology developed exclusively for the BMW M Performance Automobiles also gives the new arrivals a convincing head start in terms of efficiency. The Sedan offers fuel economy figures of 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres (44.8 mpg imp) in the EU test cycle, while the Touring achieves 6.4 l/100 km (44.1 mpg imp). CO2 emissions are 165 grams per kilometre for the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and 169 g/km in the case of the BMW M550d xDrive Touring. Standard-fitted BMW BluePerformance technology also allows the two models to meet the stipulations of the EU6 exhaust standard.

The new cars' outstanding balance between driving pleasure and fuel consumption can be credited to the impressive efficiency of the new diesel powerplant and the spread of BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard. The BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring benefit, among other things, from the pace-setting efficiency of an eight-speed Sports automatic transmission with long high gears, precisely graded responses and minimal converter slip. Another standard feature, the Auto Start-Stop function, switches the engine off automatically when the driver stops at junctions or in congestion. And the ECO PRO mode activated using the standard Driving Experience Control switch helps the driver maintain an economical and relaxed driving style through tweaks to the engine management, accelerator responses and gearshift program. In addition, ECO PRO mode regulates the output of electrically operated functions such as the climate control, heated seats and exterior mirrors to provide extremely efficient energy management. The BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring also come with Brake Energy Regeneration, need-based operation of ancillary units, active air flap control and a disengageable air conditioning compressor.

BMW xDrive all-wheel drive with special M set-up.

The BMW M Performance Automobiles come as standard with BMW xDrive to channel the engine's power variably and as the situation demands between the front and rear wheels. The electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system works using a bespoke control strategy, which allows the threat of understeer in extremely dynamic driving situations to be counteracted by adjustments to the power split, without the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system linked up to xDrive having to intervene. The system's M-specific tuning accentuates the traditional rear-wheel bias of BMW cars when it comes to power distribution.

The all-wheel-drive system of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring sends more drive to the rear axle on the entry into a corner, delivering exceptionally precise cornering and impressive directional stability. In addition, the likewise standard Performance Control divides power between the rear wheels to maximise the cars' sports performance. Carefully judged braking of the rear wheel nearest the inside of the bend coupled with a simultaneous increase in drive power ensure the car responds to the driver's steering commands instantaneously and with high precision. The driver can even use the self-steering response typical of M cars to execute controlled drifts through dynamically taken corners.

Hallmark M chassis tuning delivers precise, agile handling.

The chassis technology of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring is based on a double-wishbone front axle and integral rear axle. In addition, the Touring model has air suspension with automatic self-levelling at the rear axle. The suspension, spring and damper system, and hydraulic steering with Servotronic function also benefit from M-specific tuning. The associated modifications imbue both models with a fresh take on the traditional M handling characteristics, the cars' agility under lateral and longitudinal acceleration - and the precision of its responses to steering commands - entering a new dimension.

Special rubber bearings and anti-roll bars optimise the bodyshell mounting of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring. Plus, modified springs and dampers give the two models tighter basic responses to dynamic forces. Optimised anti-roll control promotes instantaneous turn-in at any speed. The build-up of lateral forces under changes in direction is pleasingly linear and can therefore be controlled at all times. All of which means the BMW M Performance Automobiles also preserve the familiar comfort-enhancing properties of the BMW 5-Series when it comes to ironing out bumps and ruts in the road surface. If the optional Dynamic Damper Control or Adaptive Drive system is specified, COMFORT+ mode can also be selected using the Driving Experience Control switch. The M-specific overall set-up of the BMW M Performance Automobiles also includes modifications to the tuning of the electronically controlled dampers and anti-roll control. The result is a well-resolved, typically M overall set-up regardless of the equipment options chosen.

The powerful braking system on the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring features inner-vented discs; like the discs charged with stopping the V8 petrol-engined BMW 550i, they have a diameter of 374 millimetres at the front axle and 345 millimetres at the rear. The standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design are fitted with 245/40 R 19 format tyres. 20-inch M light-alloy wheels - developed exclusively for the BMW M Performance Automobiles - with mixed tyres can be ordered as an option.

Exclusive sporting character outside and in.

Another feature of the typically M overall set-up are the aerodynamic characteristics of the body, which help to give the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring their precisely controllable dynamics. The sporty yet elegant appearance of the two cars is complemented by a bespoke, airflow-optimising design for the front and rear aprons. The front view of both models is dominated by large air intakes. For example, the spaces around the outer air intakes normally reserved for foglamps on regular BMW 5-Series models are used to enhance the inflow of cooling air. The three-dimensional shaping of the front apron incorporates air-channelling flaps at the lower edge of the outer intakes, which are split horizontally by bars painted Ferric Grey metallic. The same shade is used for the exterior mirror caps and optional 20-inch M light-alloy wheels. BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line trim for the B-pillars, exterior mirror base and window surrounds also comes as standard.

Its extremely powerful form and an integrated diffuser element allow the bespoke rear apron of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring to optimise both the cars' sporting appearance and airflow around the underbody. A horizontal trim strip on the top edge of the Black insert accentuates the width of the body. The exhaust tailpipes, positioned far to the outer edges of the rear end, come with trapezoidal embellishers in Chrome Dark. Another distinguishing feature is the "M550d" lettering on the boot lid and front door sills.

Lending the interior a familiar M ambience are features such as the gearshift lever with M logo, M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, M driver's footrest, BMW Individual roof liner in Anthracite and Aluminium Hexagon interior trim strips. The sports seats in the exclusive M variant Alcantara/Cloth in Grey Shadow are adorned with contrast stitching and an embossed M logo. Dakota leather is available as an alternative, at no extra cost.

The standard equipment of the BMW M550d xDrive and BMW M550d xDrive Touring also includes xenon headlights, Cruise Control with braking function, electrically adjustable seats with memory function for the driver's seat, 4-zone climate control, a rain sensor, the Radio Professional, a hands-free facility with USB interface, ambient light and the iDrive control system. High-quality options such as Comfort Access, automatic tailgate operation (standard in Germany on the BMW M550d xDrive Touring), hands-free tailgate opening, electrically operated glass/panoramic sunroof, doors with Soft Close Automatic function, trailer coupling, heated steering wheel, active seats, navigation systems with hard disk storage, and high-quality audio and rear-seat entertainment systems deliver a further boost to comfort.

Almost all of the BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance systems and mobility services laid on for the BMW 5-Series can also be specified here. Features such as the Park Distance Control system, rear-view camera, Adaptive Headlights, Head-Up Display, High-Beam Assistant, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Speed Limit Info, Lane Change Warning System, Lane Departure Warning System, Surround View and BMW Night Vision with pedestrian recognition are all available. Other innovative technologies enabling the link-up of the car with the outside world and the integration of mobile devices give drivers access to, among other things, the BMW Assist service (including Advanced Emergency Call with automatic position finding), BMW Online and internet, as well as the online services Facebook and Twitter, and Real-Time Traffic Information.

The powertrain: The most innovative and sporty diesel engine in the world.

Impressive statistics headline the enviable regard in which modern diesel engines are held. The output now within their compass, but more significantly the maximum torque they are capable of generating have fuelled their popularity among even performance-minded drivers. The high efficiency of diesel technology also ensures extremely low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. BMW has played a major role in the burgeoning appeal of the diesel engine, developing units which have time and again raised the bar in terms of sports performance and efficiency. The company's record of diesel engine development, which began in 1983 with the launch of its first diesel model, now continues into another fascinating dimension. The first of the new BMW M Performance Automobiles - founding a product category focusing on sporty driving pleasure - are powered by a diesel engine. The 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line unit, whose cover bears the M Performance badge, has all the necessary tools to fulfil the brief handed to the new breed: technology without parallel worldwide, the highest output ever achieved by a BMW diesel engine and outstanding levels of efficiency.

Fitted in the BMW M550d xDrive, BMW M550d xDrive Touring, BMW X5 M50d and BMW X6 M50d, the 2,993 cc engine generates maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp. No less imposing is its peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft), all of which the driver will find on tap as low down as 2,000 rpm. Instantaneous torque development maintained into the upper reaches of the rev range is the hallmark feature of the new unit, one underpinned by an array of innovative and globally unique technical wizardry. Taking centre stage - for the first time in a BMW - are a trio of turbochargers. Their arrangement and interplay strategy are the key to the engine achieving its exceptionally high efficiency.

More pressure, more output, more torque: world premiere for six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with three turbochargers.

The coordinated interplay of turbochargers of different sizes endows an engine with instantaneous responsiveness at low revs and allows charge pressure to be increased according to need when the engine is placed under greater loads. BMW uses this concept in the six-cylinder in-line diesel engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology fitted in models including the BMW 535d, BMW X5 xDrive40d and BMW X6 xDrive40d. And now the company is set to become the world's first carmaker to present a diesel engine which expands the principle of multi-stage turbocharging to incorporate a third turbocharger. The engine developed for the BMW M Performance Automobiles will, for the first time, see two comparatively small high-pressure chargers working with a larger low-pressure unit. The integration of an additional high-pressure turbo increases the engine's capability when it comes to generating charge pressure, a key ingredient in taking the engine's power output to the next level.

The M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology - including the requisite charge air cooling - is, like its predecessor, integrated into a small space in the main unit. Its compact construction puts the engine in a position to meet future pedestrian protection stipulations, while the arrangement of the three turbochargers is also part of an extremely intelligent system. Both the exhaust inflow to drive the turbos and the supply of fresh air, plus the channelling of compressed air to the combustion chambers, have been designed to ensure that the three compression units work as a team as effectively as possible at all engine speeds. Efficiency is further optimised by the variable turbine geometry of the two high-pressure chargers, which allows them to react even more precisely to the driver's power needs.

Instantaneous responsiveness and precisely coordinated interplay.

One of the two small turbos is activated at engine speeds just above idle. Its low moment of inertia allows it to respond without delay to the slightest movements of the accelerator and therefore supply the combustion chambers with compressed air at an early stage. As revs increase, the flow of exhaust gas also reaches the larger turbocharger, which announces its arrival with the engine spinning at just 1,500 rpm. Working together with the small charger, it ensures that the impressive peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft) is generated at this low engine speed and maintained up to 3,000 rpm.

To further increase the performance of the large turbocharger, a greater volume of exhaust gas is required at around 2,700 rpm. If the driver calls up additional power, a vacuum-modulated exhaust flap instantly opens up another supply route, allowing extra exhaust gas to flow past the already active high-pressure charger to the large low-pressure turbo. The third turbocharger - integrated into this bypass line - also has a low moment of inertia and variable compressor geometry, which allow it to spring into action as soon as the exhaust flap opens. The result is additional charge pressure, generated by two sources at the same time. The large turbocharger is able to deliver its full output, while the second small turbo builds on the effect of its two active colleagues by supplying even more compressed air to the combustion chambers. This arrangement allows the turbocharging system to drive the engine with forceful and sustained thrust to its maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp, which it notches up between 4,000 and 4,400 rpm. The maximum engine speed of the new diesel powerplant is 5,400 rpm.

In order to ensure that charge pressure is developed as effectively as possible, not to mention efficiently, both the exhaust flow and supply of fresh air to the turbos and the channelling of compressed air into the combustion chambers is regulated with maximum precision. If the large turbocharger is spinning at particularly high speeds, a vacuum regulator opens a wastegate valve to relieve the pressure and so avoid unwanted exhaust backpressure. The supply of fresh air is also controlled according to need by means of pneumatically activated flaps. For example, at low revs a bypass flap ensures that the air is channelled directly to the high-pressure charger, which spins into action very early. At less than 2,700 rpm a change-over flap keeps the air away from the third turbo, which is not yet active, to prevent unnecessary fluctuations in pressure.

Indirect charge air cooling enables the temperature of the air compressed by the three turbos to be reduced to the optimum level for increasing engine output. Both the main radiator positioned immediately in front of the combustion chambers and the intercooler behind the low-pressure charger are supplied by a low-temperature water circuit with separate electric pump.

Detailed optimisation enables higher combustion pressure, increased output and enhanced efficiency.

The new torquey and high-revving diesel engine also breaks new ground with its specific output of 93.6 kW per litre of displacement. However, the output possible using M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology is generated not in the turbochargers but in the core of the basic engine, which has therefore also been extensively modified. Maximum combustion pressure has risen from the 185 bar of the most powerful diesel engine in the existing BMW line-up to 200 bar.

As part of this development, the crankcase in the new 3.0-litre diesel engine features an innovative tie rod concept for the assembly of the main bearing caps and cylinder head. The sintered main bearing caps are given extra strength by a central screw. Like the crankcase, the cylinder head is also subjected to a special high-pressure compression process. This "HIPen" manufacturing concept sees the aluminium castings heated to solution annealing temperature and the casting pores created during manufacturing welded under high pressure. This process gives the finished component additional strength. A double diagonal bore ensures the interbore bridges have high thermal stability.

The geometry of the crankshaft and connecting rods has been further optimised and they are now made from higher-strength materials. Added to which, hub bushings and bowl rim remelting enhance the effect of the increase in piston compression height.

Higher pressure also raises the efficiency of the injection system.

The injection system of the new six-cylinder in-line diesel engine has also benefited from a rigorous process of further development. The common-rail direct injection system plays its part in enhancing the engine's efficiency and promoting clean combustion by sending extremely precise quantities of fuel into the cylinders. The upgraded system raises the injection pressure of the piezo injectors to 2,200 bar. During each power stroke, three pre-injections, one main injection and four post-injections of fuel take place. An ultra-high-performance pump channels the fuel to the combustion chambers through a common rail made from forged stainless steel.

The output and capacity of the cooling system have been given another boost, too. An additional low-temperature circuit supplied by an electric water pump controls the temperature of the intercoolers. The exhaust treatment system includes a diesel particulate filter and oxidation catalytic converter, which is located close to the engine in the same casing. More efficient exhaust cooling, meanwhile, minimises the formation of nitrogen oxides. And standard-fitted BMW BluePerformance technology, which includes a NOX storage catalytic converter, helps the new diesel engine powering the BMW M550d xDrive to meet the EU6 exhaust standard not due to come into force until 2014.

Eight-speed Sports automatic transmission with M-specific gearshift dynamics.

The combination of the most powerful diesel engine ever offered for a BMW with an eight-speed Sports automatic transmission ensures that drive is transferred onto the road surface extremely effectively and efficiently. The configuration of the transmission management system for the BMW M Performance Automobiles promotes dynamic acceleration. The M-specification gearshift dynamics enable extremely rapid gear changes with an almost uninterrupted flow of power. The eight-speed Sports automatic transmission offers the driver two automated shift programs - D and S modes - as well as the option of changing gear manually (in M mode).

The automatic gearbox is operated using an electronic gearshift lever on the centre console adorned with an M logo. Manual mode allows the driver to change gears sequentially using either the gearshift lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. In customary M fashion, the right-hand paddle changes up a gear and the left-hand paddle is used for downshifts. If the driver activates manual mode using the gearshift lever, the transmission holds the gear selected until the engine's revs hit the limiter. By not shifting up automatically in this mode, the gearbox gives the driver maximum control over the car when pushing the dynamic boundaries. The driver can also switch instantaneously from automatic gear changes to M mode with a nudge of one of the gearshift paddles; if M mode is selected in this way, the gearbox's automatic shift-up function remains active. The transmission also restores automatic mode if the gearshift paddles are not used again following an upshift or downshift.

Enhancing the natural soundtrack inside the car turns driving pleasure up yet another notch.

The performance capability of the diesel engine and the hallmark M driving characteristics of the BMW M Performance Automobiles underpin a new definition of driving pleasure. Imposing torque and a set-up focused squarely on sports performance give drivers a dynamic driving experience they will never have previously sampled in a diesel car. The BMW M Performance Automobiles also lace this driving pleasure with additional acoustic appeal. Through sound design technology, the natural engine sound is specifically enhanced to suit the driving situation at the time and sent into the interior via the audio system, ensuring an authentic reproduction of the new engine's unmistakable straight-six soundtrack.

The system's digital signal processing technology exchanges data directly with the engine management, allowing it to base its precise transmission of the engine's timbre on the revs at any one time, the amount of torque being produced and the car's speed over the road. Accentuating the straight-six diesel's turbine-like, sporty and sonorous tones adds to the emotional appeal of the driving experience, especially in the BMW M550d xDrive when SPORT or SPORT+ mode is activated using the Driving Experience Control switch. This gives the driver an impressively accurate impression of how hard the engine is currently working and of the power being unleashed, and provides an even clearer window into the car's responses on the road. Controlling the audio system in this way also ensures that the engine sound can be enjoyed to equal effect from every seat.
